April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day
While the entire month of April is Autism Awareness Month, April 2nd is dedicated to World Autism Awareness. With the numbers of Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses growing each year, it’s an important day for people everywhere to know more about this cause.
Here are a few facts about Autism Spectrum Disorder:
- An average of 1 in 110 children and 1 in 70 boys in the United States have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- While Autism occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, on average, the disorder is 4 to 5 times more likely to occur in boys than girls.
- Autism diagnoses are growing in number. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined.
- While there are a variety of treatments and therapies for various diagnoses on the spectrum, there is no definitive cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Organizations like Autism Speaks encourage everyone to learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder and wear blue on April 2nd and throughout the month to help spread awareness.
