Celebrating America on Columbus Day

October 12th is traditionally known as Columbus Day in America. It’s also a day when many Italian-Americans celebrate their heritage. For me, it’s a celebration of my great-grandfather’s birthday (he would have been 117 today), my cousin’s birthday (her age will remain unstated), and a celebration of all things American.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Columbus day is the rhyme I learned in grade school:

“In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

No matter what your personal feelings are about Christopher Columbus himself, I’d like to focus on the end result: America.

I don’t think Christopher Columbus could have ever imagined what he was starting when he set out from Spain.  He was just trying to make it to India, not land on what would end up being the discovery of two continents not on his map.

Today, the USA is a beloved country by its citizens.  Take time out today to do something American – brush up on history, read about current politics in your area, or simply put a flag magnet on your car.
