Hip Hip Hooray for Healthy Lung Day!
Although October is Lung Awareness Month, today in particular is Healthy Lung Day. Give a little extra effort today to keep your lungs healthy and help others understand why they should do the same.
So why should lung health be so important?
Here are some quick statistics from the CDC and American Lung Association about lung diseases and how prevalent they are in the USA:
- About 17.5 million adults and 7.1 million children have asthma.
- In 2008, 12.1 million U.S. adults aged 18 years and older were estimated to have COPD. An additional 12 million have COPD but have not been diagnosed.
- In 2006, 106,374 men and 90,080 women were diagnosed with lung cancer, and 89,243 men and 69,356 women died from lung cancer. It is the second-most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women and is the most common cause of cancer death.
Be thankful for the job your lungs do every day and do all you can to keep them healthy. And while you’re at it, spread awareness about lung health.
