It’s Melanoma Monday – Time to Check Those Moles!
The first Monday in May is dedicated to the detection and prevention of Melanoma, and has been coined by the American Academy of Dermatology as Melanoma Monday. It’s a day to help all of us to become more aware of this very serious and deadliest form of skin cancer and how to spread the word to others.
Each year, around 60,000 new cases of invasive melanoma are diagnosed in the USA. The World Health Organization reports that about 48,000 deaths occur from melanoma worldwide each year. It is most frequent in men and Caucasians.
Melanoma awareness is very close to our hearts here at Support Store. In February of this year, our company president, Ron, lost his dear friend Scott Ecklund to melanoma. My husband’s grandfather also died from melanoma almost 16 years ago. Both my father and my uncle have had spots removed, and so far have been able to avoid further growth from those spots. Even though they’ve had them removed, they both remain very vigilant in looking to make sure there are no new spots.
For more information on free skin cancer screenings and how to perform a skin cancer self-exam, please visit the American Academy of Dermatology online.
In honor of Scott and Grandpa Bud, we’re helping to spread the word about melanoma. Know your moles, check them often, and see a doctor right away if something doesn’t look right.
