March 22nd is American Diabetes Alert Day.  With the concern around the alarming rate in which Type 2 diabetes is growing in the USA, especially among children, The American Diabetes Association is stressing the importance of spreading awareness about the risk factors for all types of diabetes, methods of prevention, and the importance of early intervention for optimal management.

Currently, there are 23.6 million children and adults living with diabetes.  Of these, 5.7 million people are undiagnosed.  Each year, 1.6 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people ages 20 and older.

This is a cause that is close to my heart as I have a family member currently living with Type 1 diabetes.  Knowing the risk factors in our family has helped me be more aware of what to watch for in my children.
