Learn to Love (Your) Liver – Liver Awareness Month

In general, I have to admit that I do not like liver.  In fact, it is one of the top 3 foods that I hate.  But as far as my liver goes – you know, that really big organ in your body that cleanses your body from toxins and bacteria -  I love it!

The liver is a very fickle organ.  If you’re good to it, it will be good to you.  If you abuse it by, for example, regularly drinking too much or eating too many fatty foods, it could lead you down a very unhealthy, even fatal, path.

But it’s your liver, right?  How often do you really think about your liver?  We hear a lot about heart disease and different cancers, but how much do you really know about the liver?

Here is some info from the American Liver Foundation about the liver and liver diseases:

  • The liver is a vital organ that you can’t live without.  However, people could have liver diseases for a long time without knowing it because they may not immediately develop symptoms.
  • Liver disease can affect an individual of any age or ethnicity.
  • More than 1 in 10 Americans has liver disease, and the incidents of hepatitis C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer are on the rise.
  • Simple healthy life habits, such as eating a well balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, washing your hands, limiting the amount of alcohol you drink, and getting vaccinated can help you have a healthier liver.

So even if you don’t love to eat liver like me, learn to love your liver and take better care of it.
