Learning More about Spina Bifida in October
October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month. It’s an important cause to learn more about, especially if you’re a woman. Understanding preventative methods and tests to diagnose this illness are key.
The Spina Bifida Association explains that “spina bifida happens when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all of the way.” In literal terms, it means “split spine.” It’s the most common birth defect that disables people for life.
Spina Bifida occurs in about 7 out of every 10,000 live births in the USA. There’s a simple way to prevent it: taking folic acid.
Women of child bearing age (whether you’re planning to get pregnant or not) should take folic acid or a multi-vitamin with folic acid to prevent birth defects, spina bifida being one of them.
