Read a Good Book During Book Blitz Month
Reading is one of my favorite things to do. I love books – pretty much any book actually – except maybe scary books. If you’re a bibliophile like me (big fancy word for book lover), then January is the month for you. It’s National Book Blitz Month!Â
Â
There’s very little on the web as to who started this fun celebration of books, but I’m glad they did. It’s a time for book lovers to celebrate and for educators everywhere to spread literacy awareness.Â
The National Center for Education Statistics last surveyed adults in 2003 and found that approximately 15% of adults lacked basic litaracy skills. This is why organizations like Reading Is Fundimental work so hard to make sure children of all economic backgrounds have access to books and reading programs.Â
If you’re looking to do a little more this National Book Blitz Month, I encourage you to find a literacy program near you and find out how you can help. Also, if you have children, read to them as often as possible. And let them see you reading. If they see you enjoy it, they’ll enjoy it, too.
