Show Your Support During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. This cause is a great example of how awareness can make all the difference in saving the lives of women.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that Cervical Cancer was once the leading cause of cancer death for women. Over the past 40 years as awareness has grown and the importance of screening has been stressed, the number of cases and deaths have significantly decreased.
With that said, in 2007 over 12,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and over 4,000 women died from it.
Cervical Cancer is one of just a few cancers that has regularly screening available. Women are urged to get yearly pelvic exams where the doctor can perform a Pap test – a procedure where the doctor will take scrapings from the cervix to obtain cells to test for abnormalities.
In most cases, Cervical Cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccines are currently available to help the prevention of HPV, although there is still some controversy over their use.Â
So the next best question would be how do you prevent HPV? HPV is currently the most common sexually transmitted disease, and it is estimated that more than 70% of the population is infected with HPV. It is transmitted by skin-to-skin sexual contact. It is also being discovered that HPV may cause other cancers in men. Besides the available vaccines, the only other way of prevention is safe sexual practices, abstinence being the best of these.
No matter what your views about the vaccine, at a minimum, it is important to spread awareness about screening and HPV prevention. Because of early detection and preventitive measures, the numbers of cervical cancer cases and deaths are continuing to decrease. Wear teal this January to help spread the word.
