Support Your Favorite Animal Shelter During National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
Here’s a quick trivia question you can ask people today: How many animals are taken to shelters each year? Answer: The Humane Society of the US estimates that 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are cared for in shelters every year. Of these, 3 to 4 million are euthanized. Through November 13th, take the time to support your favorite animal shelter during National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
Animal shelters across the country work very hard and at large costs to protect animals and get them
adopted each year. Despite this hard work, millions of animals are still put down because no one comes forward to adopt them.
In this economy, no-kill shelters also find staying open difficult. There are an abundance of animals coming in, the cost to maintain care for these animals cannot be avoided, and financial support is dwindling.
If you’re not in a situation where you can adopt a pet, see what you can do to help. It may be volunteering, it could be donating money (any amount really…big or small). It may be just spreading the word for your local shelter. Any help is better than none at all.
While I’m currently not in a situation where I can volunteer or adopt, I try to do what I can for my local no-kill shelter, Save-A-Pet. I have one friend in particular who is incredibly dedicated to this shelter and has herself adopted two cats, Santa and Georgey. These are two lucky kitties, and I know if she could swing it, she’d give more of these cats, and probably a couple dogs, a home.
My sister-in-law, who is a dog behaviorist, trainer and groomer, has an adopted pup named Lola whom she adopted through a pitbull rescue, and has fostered many other dogs over the years.
If and when the time is right, I know we’ll look at adopting a dog from a shelter for our family. Until then, I know that the few dollars I can share with Save-A-Pet is going to feed and take care of these precious friends. I hope you all do the same!
