Take a Deep Breath & Shout Out a Big “Hooray!” For Lung Awareness Month
There’s nothing like taking a nice deep breath when you’re out in the fresh air. If you have a lung condition, like asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), or emphysema, you appreciate even more how good that deep breath feels and learn not to take it for granted. Learn how to keep your lungs healthy during Lung Awareness Month.
This is a cause that’s particularly important to me. I’m an asthmatic and was diagnosed about 16 years ago. I’m happy to say that my asthma is controlled, but it’s always something I need to be aware of. Even if you don’t have a lung condition, you need to be aware of the current state of your lungs, too.
According to the American Lung Association, “the average adult takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute – over 20,000 breaths a day.” Our lungs are one of those organs we can’t live without, and when they’re in trouble, we can feel it pretty quickly. Clean air is essential to keeping our lungs healthy so we can breathe easier and have better overall health.
Here are some tips from the American Lung Association on keeping your lungs healthy:
- Don’t smoke.
- Avoid exposure to pollutants that can damage your lungs.
- Prevent infection.
- Get regular health care.
If you’re concerned about lung disease, here are some warning signs from the American Lung Association:
- Chronic Cough
- Shortness of Breath
- Chronic Mucus Production
- Coughing up Blood
- Chronic Chest Pain
Keep taking those deep breaths and support the need to keep our air clean — for everyone!
