Thank your favorite teacher on World Teachers’ Day
By the end of high school, most students have had dozens of teachers including parents, coaches, and of course, school teachers. We all have our favorites, and October 5th is the day we should take a minute or two out of our day and say THANK YOU!
I’ve been fortunate enough to have some wonderful teachers in my life. In fact, I carry a picture of my first grade teacher and second/third grade teacher in my purse. My picture of Ms. O’Neill and Ms. Rooney is one of my little reminders to never forget the foundation of my learning. It’s the two of them I think of when I read certain stories to my boys, and every time I sign my name (Ms. Rooney taught me cursive).
Then there were those pesky junior high years when I had Mrs. Formica for various subjects. Some of my funniest pre-teen school memories are from her classes. Every time I see her at my son’s school, I get to see her, and if I’m in the school office, she gets that look in her eye of “oh no — don’t tell them that story!” No matter what crosses my mind, though, it is because of Mrs. Formica that I can detail every occurrence sited in the Billy Joel song “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
As for high school, there are three teachers whose lessons I still use on a daily basis: Mr. DePalma, Miss Hoisington, and Miss Harris. Mr. D. taught me how to effectively write, Miss Hoisington brought literature alive for me, and Miss Harris challenged me in a way that mad me want to read every literary work I could get my hands on.
So this October 5th, I am sending my sincere thanks to all my teachers, but especially Ms. O’Neill, Ms. Rooney, Mrs. Formica, Mr. DePalma, Miss Hoisington and Miss Harris. I am forever grateful for your dedication and the lessons you’ve taught me. My hope is that every child will be as fortunate as I’ve been to have such fabulous influences in my life.
Take the time and thank your teachers today!
