Wear Purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
Many causes make November their awareness month, and among this is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness. While this is a difficult disease for the person who has it, it can often also be a difficult time for the person’s family members and caretakers.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Disease is “a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.”
While it is thought that Alzheimer’s Disease afflicts only older generations, there are over 200,000 people in the USA under the age of 65 with younger-onset of the disease. This early onset can strike people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.
As with many diseases, early detection is key. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that, if you see these 10 warning signs, you should contact a doctor:
1 – Memory loss that disrupts daily life.
2 – Challenges in planning or solving problems.
3 – Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure.
4 – Confusion with time or place.
5 – Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.
6 – New problems with words in speaking or writing.
7 – Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps.
8 – Decreased or poor judgement.
9 – Withdrawal from work or social activities.
10 – Changes in mood or personality.
Another often forgotten aspect of Alzheimer’s Disease are the caretakers who work day in and day out with family members. Many times, caretakers need just as much support as the person with the disease. If you know someone who is a caretaker, ask what you can do to give them support as they take care of a person with Alzheimer’s.
